Say Good Bye to Soapnet!

ABC will be transitioning Soapnet, the 24 hour soap cable soap channel, into yet another Disney channel, Disney Junior. The new Disney will feature programming geared towards preschool age children and their families. The change is set to take place in 2012. I can't say this comes as a surprise at all (relive my Soapnet rant from last year by clicking here). Soapnet has steadily declined it's soap related programming, opting for tired Lifetime movies and ill fated reality shows. Once Soap Talk was canceled, it was the beginning of the end. What shame. The only channel devoted to soap fans will soon be nothing but a memory.

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Those punks! I agree with you about it going away from soaps especially after Soap Talk. I LOVED that show, it really was one of a kind. What a bummer, that's all we need is another kid channel!

  2. I figured as long as we had SoapNet, then surely some of our soaps would be safe from elimination. I guess it really is the beginning of the end.

  3. This blows, I always relied on SoapNet as a fallback whenever a few minutes of a show pre-empted for numerous special reports. i.e. tommorow ABC has one scheduled for 12:45pm ET which will likely bleed into the beginning of AMC. ABC's policy of next day rescheduling only applies when the entire show is pre-empted in a timezone, we're out of luck when it's only a few minutes. It will also suck that we will no longer get clean end credits. i.e. how One Life to Live's end credits are very similar to the old Peabo Bryson opening with photo headshots.

Hopefully ABC starts dipping into REAL archives for encore presentations like they did a few years ago on Christmas for the east coast with Greenlee's and Ryan's wedding from 2004, complete with the classic ABC Daytime bumpers and graphics for the local breaks, as opposed to showing an episode from a month ago. One GREAT sendoff to SOAPnet would be to show the earliest episode of each soap they ever aired that they have ready to air on the final weekend.

  4. That so sucks! It was the only reliable way to catch all the episodes of AMC when the local network pre-empted things or the DVR froze up. BOO HISS! And no more seasons of "I want to be a Soap star" either. I liked that show.

Disney channels blow. And pretty much the last thing preschoolers need is their own channel. They need to get outside and play! Get Jamie Oliver on this. :)

  5. You probably know by now AMC was pre-empted on the East Coast, well this seemed to work at perfectly since at the same time The View was pre-empted on the West. So right now ABC's west coast feed is airing The View instead of AMC.

On a side note, provided SOAPnet's "original" series, and by original I mean imported from the CBC, is still on the air in 2012, I wonder if ABC Family or ABC will pick them up instead. Being Erica seems to be something that will fit well with ABC Family.

  6. As soon as AMC was preempted today, I went straight to the cable guide on my dvr and programmed my dvr to tape AMC this evening....so, I wonder what I will be recording??

  7. Tuck, you'll be recording yesterday's AMC. Soapnet doesn't official leave until 2012.
