The Lights Are Going Out... AMC/OLTL Cancelled

It's official.  All My Children and One Life to Live have been canceled.  Done deal, official word from ABC is in.  It's done.  After 41 years, AMC will go off the air in September.  OLTL will go off in January.  To be replaced by a cooking show (The Chew) and a talk show (The Revolution).

“While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is,” said Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney ABC/Television Group. “We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. A perfect example of this is ‘The View,’ and that factored into our decision. ‘The Chew’ and ‘The Revolution’ are in the same vein and will be great additions to the lineup, with ‘The View’ serving as an ideal foundation from which to launch these programs. They will also provide enormous opportunity for the creation of ancillary businesses and growth.”

Thanks for nothing Mr. Frons.

  1. If I want food shows, I go to Food Network and The Cooking Channel or Rachel Ray on network television. As far as talk shows, we really don't need another one, the market is way overcrowded. While this isn't a surprise, there are no words to express my sadness. (And Bobbie just tweeted that she's taping scenes with a new character.)And all these folks relocated to LA for what? The only people that will be "ok" is Cameron and Rebecca. Of course, they're ABC's "fair-haired" kids.

  2. Oh no! Now what am I going to do from 1-3pm on m-f? I have watched the abc lineup for over 20 years, and I am truly hurt. I have grown up with these characters, and have loved watching them grow and evolve. Even with the bad plots (anyone remember Josh Madden?), the throw away storylines (where is Petey Cortland) and the constant replacing of staple characters (how many Colbys have we had in the past 3 years?) I still stuck by the show, watching online when I missed an episode. This really sucks. Thanks for nothing ABC!

  3. how can we get a protest or petition started this is an outrage. I love both soap and been watching for years.

  4. There already is a petition and letter writing campaign going on. It didn't help. Official cancellation is a done deal no matter how much we protest. Just as ATWT and GL fans.

  5. Hate to sound so defeatist, but we've been defeated.

  6. It does suck, but it felt inevitable. At least with Broderick, the show should conceivably go out with a bang.

I wouldn't be surprised if Agnes Nixon brought back the Aggie role in order to give the final creed.

  7. Have watched these shows for 35 years. I am saddened and sick. Who in f needs another show about food? Or a "lifestyle" show. How awful!! It's going to be like losing old friends.

  8. I am devastated I will not be watching these news shows. There is another chatter other places I want my AMC.

  9. 1. I will not watch the replacements
    2. Frons is not sad/bittersweet/whatever. This is exactly what he wanted. He is a liar.
    3. I will watch until the bitter end.
    4. Do you think they will finally explain what happened when Frankie took drunk Madison home from Jake & Amanda's wedding? I think they did the deed and that Frankie is the father of Madison's baby!

  10. Was it so hard to give the fans one more Christmas in Pine Valley? It was always the highlight of the year! Even Guiding Light got one last Bauer BBQ.

  11. I don't want another cooking show and I don't need or want another talk show. What a stupid short sided decision. You lost me viewership. I think all AMC and OTL fans need to not watch anything that ABC puts on and teach them a lesson on who the boss really is. The Viewers.

  12. Well considering that I don't watch ANY cooking shows or talk shows you can bet your bottom dollar that I will not be watching these.

    So sad . . . . . . . . .

  13. The ABC O&O's are screwed, these shows scream cancelled within 3 months, and with no Oprah as a bridge between General Hospital and the local news their ratings will suffer.

  14. Well, there are a couple of younger actors that I expect might springboard into better roles. I think Stephanie Gatschet is due for a breakout role in something. She put on her FB a week or so ago that she taped a pilot.

And it's long overdue that Ricky Paull Goldin gets a chance to do something great. He's probably the most natural guy on daytime.

  15. ABC and Disney just lost a loyal viewer and customer. Can't believe this news. I feel like I lost a member of my family. I've been watching AMC for years and always look forward to going to DisneyWorld. Sadly, either AMC or DineyWorld won't be a part of my life anymore. Really BAD decision ABC.

  16. Say it isn't so!!! I hate you ABC! I hate you!!
(throwing myself on the floor kicking and screaming in a full blown temper tantrum)

  17. ABC PULL HEAD OUT, I'VE WATCHED FROM THE FIRST SHOW AMC AIRED......
VERY VERY VERY BAD IDEA... YOU WILL LOSS LOTS OF VIEWER. FOOD NETWORK IS WHERE TO GO FOR COOKING SHOWS. AGAIN I SAW PULL YOUR HEAD OUT!!!!!!!!!!
    DUMB DUMB AND DUMB'ER

  18. I just cannot believe it. I have been watching AMC since January 5, 1970, and OLTL after that. I have always thought BF was destructive. Now, why in the world would we need ANOTHER show that is the same as all the rest? It's not like there are only three networks, it's everywhere. How really, really dumb. And I will not with ABC "good luck." Frankly, I hope all the changes make the network fall flat on its you-know-what. Maybe then Frons will get fired.

  19. Those "replacement" shows sound ridiculous...epic fail!!!!! Hearing the description of the food show, really sounds like a bad SNL spoof. Have watched AMC for 31 years and I am pissed!!!!

  20. One more talk show is going to kill me!! I can not bear one more! I don't watch the ones that are on now. Cannot stand The View! Hello?? Food Network!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow. There goes another piece of my childhood. :(

Yippy skippy more reality drek! Don't count on me watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Is there not a thing we can do? Fans who supported this show for all these years get no say in this at all? Is it cheaper to put a food show on? Must be. It's always about money. They don't care about the fans at all. This is breaking my heart. 41 years of these friends and now they will be gone just like that! I was 18 years old when I started watching this. They have become like family. We were lied indeed. What happened to the new writers? What happened to the firing of the old ones? The biggest mistake was going to California where all the great movie makers and great WRITERS are. In all of Calif. no writers can be hired? No, it all has to do with money. Food and talk shows are cheaper to air. Well, with on one watching these replacement shows, maybe ABC will be cancelled next!!! I will be voicing my comments on ABC next. Directly under their announcement. I would advise all of you to do the same.

  23. ABC has lost ALL of my viewership. Any show they air, that I still watch, I'll watch on HULU. Anything to keep this network out of my house and off my TV. I'm sickened and saddened by what has transpired. Brian Frons can kiss every loyal AMC viewers butt and he still couldn't appease. What do we need another cooking show or talk show for when other networks are loaded with them?????? I will watch to the bitter end and cherish the view episodes left. I've recorded a few episodes in the past and will savor all of the memories.

  24. That's it for me...I have been watching the show since about day 1. Why should I go on any longer?

For what? A cooking channel...come on, it's not because the viewers wanted something simple, it's because the network did not have to spend the money on quality actors, when they only have to spend money on some microwaves, stoves, or ovens, oh, and maybe a host or 2.

Adios amigos....Kathy we will catch you on Facebook. My AMC days are now over..........41 years...for nothing..

  25. This is as bad a decision as was NBC faux pau moving Jay Leno to the 10p weeknight slot. We all know how that went. This is horrible news. I have watched AMC for over 40 years. Erica & I have grown up together. I will never watch a cooking show or the other replacement show. There are enough of both of those types of shows all over 900 channels out there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is the WRONG move ABC!!!! Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!!!! ABC you will regret this decision...you will loose many viewers...this is a SAD day for ABC and day time television.

    ReplyDelete
  27. What a horrible, horrible day. :(

  28. I hate to see this all end, but if it has to, can we please get rid of Pastor Ricky TODAY?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why don't the networks value their aging viewers? There is literally nothing interesting to watch on daytime TV anymore. It's all just mindless, self-promotional drivel centered around personalities. Boring boring boring. Losing AMC is like losing a part of my identity. I've been telling folks "I'm an AMC fan" since 1978, and now that part of me is being taken away. I was really looking forward to growing old with Tad, Liza, Jesse and Angie (happiest soap moment ever was their reunion), mourning the passing of the legendary Erica Kane, and watching Pine Valley change with the newest generation.

  30. Im so angry about this news. 3 generations of my family are glued to the dvr/vcr watching these shows. ABC this is the dumbest thing ive heard in a while 2nd only to congress last week. a cooking and a talk show??? realy??? At least think of something better than that!!!!! Of course it wont matter to me as i wont be watching your networks any longer.

  31. If ABC cancels these two soaps, I for one will not watch ABC anymore. Especially to replace them with such rediculous shows. I don't know who you polled - but certainly not the majority of your daytime viewers. Just plan "STUPID" decision. You think your ratings are low now - just wait until you put those two new shows on - because no one is planning on watching them. In fact - everyone I have talked to is boycotting ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  32. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been a loyal fan from the beginning. I don't believe for a minute that the ratings could possibly be so bad that you would cancel both shows.
Why did you move AMC to California?
I don't know who is in charge, but, I hope that individual loses his job!

  33. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been a loyal fan from the beginning of both shows. I can't believe this is about ratings and we sure don't need another talk show and Food Network has plenty of cook shows. I love the View and I don't believe you can possibly come up with another show of that caliber - just ask CBS- The Talk!
I don't know you made this decision, but, I sure hope he loses his job over this.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I seriously will not watch ABC ever again after there is no more AMC...HUGE mistake ABC. I can watch the news on any channel and I will even boycott dancing with the stars, which would be your only salvation. You should really listen to the viewers and reconsider your decision!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Really ABC????????? Where is the petition? Also, Is there any way that AMC can continue on another network?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I truly hope that another network picks up AMC and kicks your ass ABC, would serve you right!!!! Dumb asses...

    ReplyDelete
  37. So stupid. Hope Ur whole network goes bankrupt. I will never watch Ur channel again. Dumbest idea ever. Talk show I think theres enough of them. Channel 4 here I come. Nitwit

    ReplyDelete
  38. I hate talk shows wouldn't watch a cooking show to save my life. I don't watch nightime programing because of all the crap. Might as well get rid of the tv or at least the expensive cable. If it's a done deal can't change anything now, but last time I read anything about this it was a rumor. Not happy, but really you don't can. You wouldn't get many people watching this crap. Other channel has phil, the talk, ellen. Just too many.
