RIP Mary Fickett
Beloved AMC star, Mary Fickett (original Ruth Martin) has passed away Thursday at her home in Callao, VA. She was 83 years old. Mary had been ill for some time and bedridden for several years. A true legend, Mary paved the way for soap stars, being the first ever daytime actor to win an Emmy. Her hometown newspaper has a beautiful tribute to Mary that I highly recommend. She will be greatly missed. AMC ends it run on ABC on September 23 and the September 21 show will be dedicated in Mary's memory.
Such a beautiful article. I always loved when she was on the screen.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gift she gave us for almost 30 years. I appreciate Lee Meriweather, but Mary Fickett will always be the real Ruth Martin.
ReplyDeleteShe was an incredibly important part of AMC for me from the very first day. I don't know why, but for some reason, that actress and that character always had a great appeal for me.
In Chicago, where I'd moved from Iowa in 1972, I actually got to meet her. A friend who worked at a department store, Carson Pierie Scott, called me at the bank I was working at to tell me that RUTH MARTIN was on her floor!! I got permission for an early lunch and ran right over there. She was as nice as I thought she'd be.
Wow, so many years......
In all her interviews, she comes off as just about as nice as her character.
R.I.P. indeed.
Lovely article! Sad to hear this news. I think I read that they are dedicating the 9/20 to her. It'll be a tearjerker!
ReplyDeleteSorry, the 9/20 SHOW!
ReplyDeleteHow ironic that an actress in the orignal cast would die during the same month as the show going off the air...What a dark cloud over our beloved show.
