This week from the Soap Blog Coalition!!!

Should SOAPnet produce a splashy Santa Barbara miniseries or movie? Jamey lays out the evidence why he thinks they should. (Daytime Confidential)

Check out the latest rant on the PVB regarding how low can SOAPnet go. Do you agree with Kathy, has the station has "jumped the shark"? (Pine Valley Bulletin)

As the malpractice suit/murder mystery on General Hospital trudges along, we've been entertained by some great quote worthy moments, here are some of the best (Scrubs Hub)

In their latest Soap Opera Digest column, the Serial Drama girls focus on veteran characters. Some shows, like All My Children and The Young & The Restless, use them well and give them great stories, and then there's General Hospital and what they have done with Luke Spencer. (Serial Drama)

I was compelled to pause the DVR after being so totally outraged over the scene that took place at the Chancellor estate. If Neil genuinely recognized the fact that Mrs. "C" was in trouble, he should have called 911 immediately. (Soap Opera Examiner)

Lisa LoCicero just got a contract on General Hospital. Will it matter? Either way, we're happy! (Wubs.net)

Rant on.... What's Become of Soapnet!?

In my opinion, Soapnet, the 24 hour all soap channel has officially jumped the shark. In fact, I'd say this happened several years ago when Soap Talk, the gabfest starring Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway was cancelled. This was a show for soap fans, starring soap stars. That along with Soapography and One Day With..., which have also disappeared, were what I believed a soap channel should focus on.

But after those shows left the air (granted you can see Soapography and One Day With... reruns in the middle of the night or in the wee hours of the morning if you're so inclined. But no new shows have been made) Soapnet went further and further away from it's soapy roots as they took on Lifetime movies, bumping some of the soap marathons that soap fans had come to rely on. Then it got worse and worse, as Soapnet then delved into reality shows. Sure, I Want to be a Soap Star makes sense. And I'll even give them their own soap, Being Erica. But when things like Southern Belles: Louisville started to crop up, my ire at the network grew. Yet another show about spoiled rich women??? Does the world need this? Doesn't Bravo have enough of those inane shows to sate people's need to know how the other half lives?

My disgust reached a fever pitch when Soapnet would not pick up the broadcast of this years Daytime Emmy's while the show floundered looking for a network to show it. How is it possible that the only soap channel on cable would not pick up the broadcast! Seriously, I'm flummoxed by this!

Today, a new press release came out announcing two new shows for Soapnet. One is Holidate. It was originally supposed to only be a one-hour special, but now has been expanded to a 10 episode series. Each episode will highlight two women who switch lives and date men in each other's towns. The women will communicate with each other as they hunt for true love. I'm going to be sick.

Next up is Bank of Mom and Dad. This show, based on a BBC series, shows what happens when mom and dad move in with their twentyish and thirtyish daughters who are not making ends meet on their own. Financial expert Farnoosh Torabi chimes in with help. I'm talking serious disgust here now.

Thank you Mr. Brian Frons. Thank you for changing a once great channel into yet another cesspool of reality nonsense. Thank you for removing shows that interest soap fans and replacing them with inane crap. Thank you for contributing to the downfall of soaps. This soap fan would much prefer to see classic episodes of my favorite soaps over this drivel. Where did Ryan's Hope go (oh wait I know, it's shown at 5 am now)? Why aren't you showing Another World, Edge of Night, Dark Shadows, Somerset and other soaps that are gone but not forgotten? Why are poorly made Lifetime movies on in place of classic soaps? Why all these new far from reality television shows? Am I really off the mark here? Do people... do soap fans who are supposedly the bread and butter of Soapnet, really want to see pseudo reality shows about snotty rich people and their catty arguments with other snotty rich people or their spoiled kids. Maybe I'm out of the loop. Maybe this is what soap fans want these days. All I know, this soap fan does not.

Amanda wants to know who has her baby. And Annie attacks Erica!

This week from the Soap Blog Coalition!!!

Ah the power of a recession! With daytime in an increasingly perilous state, several soap operas seem to finally be willing to pull out all the stops to attract new viewers and/or mainstream buzz by going gay, puritanical watchdog groups and skittish sponsors be damned. (Daytime Confidential)

Lots of Spoilers and Rumors out there this week. Is Ethan working for Helena? Will Jason and Johnny work together again? (GHOFS)

While Amanda longs to have her baby back and doesn't realize he's right under her nose, flashback to 1997 when Maria was in a similar situation. Only it was she who thought her baby was dead while Erica held on to little Maddie, passing her off as Russian adoptee Sonya. (Pine Valley Bulletin)

On the off chance that someone should ask them why they hate Ryan Lavery, the Serial Drama girls have started to compile a list of the myriad reasons for their loathing. (Serial Drama)

On a soapless summer weekend, we are more than often blessed with good weather which typically allows us to take a break and simply forget about the soaps for a couple of days. Find out how to survive the soapless weekends (Soap Opera Examiner)

It's nice to see Robin getting back to basics since returning home to Patrick and Emma last month. (The Scrubs Hub)

Michael Lowry joins OLTL!

Former Jake Martin, Michael Lowry has been cast in a recurring role as "someone from the past" on OLTL. No first airdate is yet available. Lowry played Jake from 1997-2000 and has also had roles on ATWT and B&B.

FLASHBACK - June 24, 1997

Twelve years ago on this day, Erica Kane returned Maddie Grey to her rightful parents, Edmund and Maria. Oh what a tangled web of deception this was! On the day Erica was to re-wed Dimitri, happy and pregnant with his child, she collapsed on her way to the alter and suffered a miscarriage. It was difficult for Erica to live in harmony with back at Wildwind with Edmund and Maria, who were expecting a child, a painful reminder of what Erica had lost. Her suspicions about Maria and Dimitri's new found closeness got the better of her and Maria finally admitted to Erica that she and Dimitri had an affair.

Erica started to wonder if the baby Maria was carrying was actually Dimitri's and in a case of really poor judgment, Erica lured Maria to a cabin in the woods in the middle of a raging storm to confront her. Maria ended up going into labor but due to a flash flood, the roads were washed out and they had no way to get to the hospital. Erica delivered the baby. Maria begged her to take the child to the hospital so Erica left and tried desperately to get the baby to safety. But her car skidded off the road and went into the river. Erica searched and searched for the baby, but came up empty.

With all believing the baby had died, Erica
went back to the scene of the accident and found a trailer nearby. Here was the home of Esther Glynn. And here is where Erica found Maria's baby. Making a deal with Esther, Erica decided to keep the child for herself and passed her off as a child she adopted from Russia. She named the baby Sonya Kane.

Watching Maria grieve for her child became more than Erica could handle though and she finally decided to give the child back to the Grey's. Furious with her deception, Dimitri washed his hands of Erica. She was sent to prison for kidnapping

This weeks spoilers are now posted!! So what's the deal... is Annie really doing better or is she just as koo-koo nutty as before? Seems nutso to me! One couple calls it quits.
